Your Personal Mission Statement for Success Before I get into the 5 steps to creating a mission statement let me give you a brief explanation of what a personal mission statement is
Your personal mission statement is a statement of who you are, what you have achieved, what is important to you, how you contribute to others, and what goals you have for the future. It’s a way of dynamically presenting what’s meaningful in your life.
It gives you a chance to identify what is unique and special about you and highlight what your gifts are. This will help you to identify what you have to offer the world.
It can include personal, professional, and desired attributes.
But one of the most beautiful things about creating a personal mission statement is your ability to present yourself clearly and concisely not only in your personal life but to colleagues and employers in the corporate world.
Step 1
Identify what values you hold.
We all know people who can talk the talk but your personal mission statement is about being able to walk the walk and this often comes down to the values you hold.
Let me give you a scenario, your boss comes in and says sell these TVs for $500 each. There only really worth $200 but if you do a good job I’ll split the profit with you.
And you look at the TVs he wants you to sell, and you think man these TVs aren’t even worth $200.
Now I know it’s difficult because it’s your job and you need to earn money. And you know your boss could make life pretty tough for you if you refuse to sell.
What do you do?
Does your feeling of integrity and honesty prevent you from selling the TVs?
Well to help you decide, let me give them some insight into what your values relate to

Your experiences, attitude and beliefs are part of what makes you who you are. They affect how you think, what you do and how you do it. Your background, upbringing, experiences and relationships will all have a part in the way you see things.
It’s important to realise, however, that sometimes your attitudes and beliefs can lead you to assume things about people that are not right or fair.
So. It’s important that you realise this and develop self-awareness so that you can learn to check that this does not happen.
You should therefore take time to learn about and understand the different attitudes and beliefs of others so that you can work with individuals in a way that takes these into account.
Understanding your values will ensure you sync what you do in life with your fundamental beliefs.
So let’s get back to the scenario with your boss getting you to sell cheap TV’s at a premium price.
What does your upbringing say about what you should do?
And what does your attitude towards life and experiences lead you to think?
Whenever you’re placed in difficult situations like this being honest with yourself and others is definitely the way to go.
And this should be reflected in how you should approach your boss.
So, the first step to crafting your personal mission statement for success is to write down 6 of the most important values you hold
And use them to beat out your personal mission statement.
These might be things like having faith in God,
Bring creative
Having respect for the planet and its natural resource.
being humble and caring.
understanding the values of family or friends.
These should include things that are crucially important to you that you cherish.
Step 2
The second step toward creating a personal mission statement for success is
Discovering what stirs your passion?
Is it Music? Art? Prose? Watching wildlife? Cooking? Is it bringing joy to others?
What makes you happiest?
If music stirs your passion and being creative. But you’re working a 9-5 job in a call centre, not that there’s anything wrong with working for a call centre, but you’re not doing what you really make you excited. Then this should be something you should be looking to change and your personal mission statement should reflect this.
Think about when you like yourself the most?
Is it immediately after you’ve performed an act of kindness?
Or when you’ve got round to doing something that you’ve been putting off for ages?
Take the time to “take control and responsibility for your emotional and psychological, well-being”
If you are relying on anyone or anything else for your happiness, stop that right now.
There are those who take control of their life and there are those who are life’s victims.
You should work on deciding which one you want to be?
As a Christian, I believe God wants us to use our talents, skills and ability to be the best people we can be and help others.
Conversely, look at things that you need to improve on.
Understand that if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.
If you always avoid difficult tasks, you’ll never challenge yourself and this time next year you’ll be in exactly the same place.
So use your personal mission statement to record at least 3 things that make you feel most alive.
Step 3
The third step to creating the ultimate personal mission statement is:
Defining your personal strengths and characteristics.
Knowing your personal strengths and weaknesses can help you choose the right career or make the best decision.
This is because if you are able to focus, on what you do around your personal strengths, you have the chance to create something remarkable while making it look like it’s almost effortless for you.
This is what you do best and where your real talents are.
Are you organized?
Can you chat with anyone?
Or do you have excellent patience?
Think about what comes naturally easy for you.
These could be things that are so obvious, you almost don’t notice it in yourself anymore, because it is almost like part of your very nature
What does the Bible say about strength?
In Deuteronomy 31 Verse 6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Believe it or not, you have some amazing strengths
But you may not have thought about them.
Some examples of personal strength include :
- Caring for others
- Listening to people
- Being there for your family?
- Understanding and empathizing with others.
- Being a creative thinker
- Having the ability to inspire people
- Visionary
- Willpower
- Confident
You may be surprised to know, that your positive character traits can be used to build your life mission. When you look at for example Steve Jobs one of the greatest visionaries that ever lived. As a result, he created one of the best mission statements I’ve ever seen: To make a contribution to the world by making tools for the mind that advance humankind.
So, the next step is to write down two things that you have absolutely nailed and which play to your strengths and record them in your personal mission statement.
Step 4
The fourth step toward completing your mission statement is
- Asking yourself the question – If you could change some things about the world, what would they be?
- Would you free all caged animals?
- Maybe you’d ensure that everyone, regardless of their class or creed, had access to education?

Step 5
The fifth step to creating a personal mission statement is to keep it short and sweet.
The purpose is to focus only on what matters the most.
Try writing down five words that describe you and your purpose. Using that list of five words, try writing down two words that describe you and your purpose. Then think of one word and write that down. Use these words as inspiration to help keep your personal mission statement short.
Above all, you should be true to yourself.
Know that it’s okay to make changes to your mission statement as you grow and continue learning.
It should capture, in a few succinct sentences, the essence of your life goals and the philosophies and values underlying them.
Equally important, it should signal what your life is all about and how you can serve your community.
You may wish to share your personal mission statement with the most important people in your life.
They can provide you with important insights that can help you improve upon the statement.
