Honesty As A Core Value? The First Personal Core Values | Definitive Definition?

Honesty personal core values

Have you ever told a lie and felt really bad about it afterward?

Sometimes we don’t tell the truth and deliberately tell lies to get ourselves out of a sticky situation or to make ourselves appear more competent or trustworthy than we are.

“It was almost impossible not to tell lies even with the best intention.”

I thought about this foundational value in-depth, and remember a Pastor at my mum’s church asking us to put our hands up if we’d never told a lie. There were only a few people who put their hands up. On looking around at the congregation, the Pastor smiled and called the people with their hands up liars.

Everyone, including the people with their hands up, immediately started laughing. He explained how it was almost impossible not to tell lies even with the best intention.

I was bemused to learn how he had himself told a lie only last week. His wife telephoned him to ask whether he has peeled potatoes for lunch, he said:

“Yes, of course, I have love.”

“it serves to show how hard it can be to follow your core values.”

Although he had it on his list of things to do, he hadn’t actually done it yet. But he didn’t tell her the truth because he wanted to make out he was on top of things.

But it definitely serves to show how difficult it can be to follow your core beliefs.

“Being dependable is being reliable and trustworthy,”

By the end of the year, I was the only person who was still helping to run the event, and I remember the founder of the club, thanking me for helping to run the club for three years in a row.

Many core values are interchangeable, going back to my story about helping to run the social club, being dependable meant that I was committed to running the club regardless of whether I wanted to or not.

Core Values That Make You Feel Good

Although I didn’t want to continue running the club, my core values, (dependable, committed, and loyal) encouraged me to continue.

Looking back at it, I got so much out of seeing the club through to its natural end.  I felt self-appreciation, satisfaction, and joy.

Love personal core values

Perfect love, what is it?

Love is a profound feeling of affection for someone that involves a complexity of emotions and takes many shapes and forms; it is one of the most controversial core values because it embraces so many facets.

There are so many things you could love, and in varying degrees, you could love your job, your partner, and love God all at the same time and in different ways and to different degrees.

In 1 Corinthians 13: 4-5 the Bible explains what perfect love is and states –

“Truly loving yourself doesn’t mean you’re a narcissist,”

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

Core Value Love

Some believe that love is overused and overrated. However, love in its purest form promotes healthy, fulfilling relationships that aren’t based on selfish whims, or fleeting emotion or lust. It’s based on a profound willingness to sacrifice your own happiness for someone else’s.

Do you love someone so much you put them before yourself? Yes, well, that’s what I call love.

“accepting yourself for
who you are.”

Now the next question to ask you is, do you love yourself?

Perhaps one of the most challenging core values of them all. Loving yourself doesn’t mean you’re a narcissist. It means taking care of your physical and mental well-being.

Your core beliefs should change based on your lived experience. So for example, you believe giving money to the homeless is wrong because the homeless will spend it on drink or drugs. Your belief might be founded on your past experience giving money to the homeless.

An open-minded person is however at least willing to entertain the benefit of the doubt. Even it’s against your better judgment.
